<1>Luppescu and Day revealed the dictionary use had a facilitating effect on short-term word retention(1993).
~~Luppescu and Day disclosed that using dictionary can help learners to remember the words for a short period of time.
<2>The learner always feels more secure when he/she can access the translations or explanations in the native language(Laufer and Kimmel,1997:362)
~~When the learner can find translations or explanations in the native language, they can feel safer.
<3>The affective factors are assumed to be involved in this kind of strong preference for bilingual dictionaries.
~~People have proposed all sorts of hypotheses to explain that the affective factors are taken part in this kind of strong preference for bilingual dictionaries.
<4>The preference for bilingual dictionaries over monolingual is found to be so robust(Baxter,1980;Hartmann,1987;McCarthy,1990;Laufer and Kimmel,1997) that is not only difficult but also often impractical to force the learner to give up the habit of using bilingual dictionaries (Hartmann,1987:22)
It is not only learners of low and intermediate proficiency who rely heavily on bilingual dictionaries, but also advanced learns, who consult this type of dictionary more often than their monolingual counterparts.
<5>It is clearly to see that the English definition and the Chinese translation are placed side by side in this dictionary. The learner can choose the meaning of this target word from the Chinese translation if he/she feels more comfortable; but he/she can alternatively learn from the English definition if that is more suitable for his/her needs. By providing both kinds of information at the same time, this type off dictionary is argued to be able to meet the needs of most language learners, whether they chose to focus on the bilingual or the monolingual part. ~~The English definition is put alongside the Chinese translation in this dictionary which the learner can choose to use for his/her needs.

It's popular for elementary school students in Taiwan to attend English supplementary education which provides compulsory education from age of 3 to 13. These English schools can be classified according to the age range of the pupils and the types of education provided. Basically, there are two types of English supplementary educations: infant and primary. Infant English education caters for age 3 to 6, while primary English education for ages 6 to 13. The latter can also be sub-divided into junior schools (for age 6-8) and secondary schools (for ages 8-9 or 9-12 or 13). According to their abilities, the pupils of secondary school may again be grouped and selected by means of an examination at the age of 10-13. There are three programs provided for the students to promote their English ability. The first program is that they may learn English by listening and speaking. And the second one is to read and write. The last one is that they may learn some of simple, easy grammar from the courses. It is the main reason for the parents in Taiwan to send their children to the professional English schools.

Marriage

Marriage, according to the English dictionary, means a union of a husband and a wife, but in modern Chinese society, it is more than that—it is a union of the two families. As we know, the two families don’t know each other at first, and now they become a close relative owing to the relationship of marriages. Under such circumstances, they share the happiness and trouble together. While a member of one family gets into trouble, the members of the other family will, without hesitation, help him/her to tackle the difficult problems. Therefore, the marriage, I think, is like a rope which ties the two families together. And that’s to say, before one wants to get married, he/she has got to check the family background of the other to avoid troublesome problems one stirs up. Judging from what mentioned above, marriage is not only a union of a husband and a wife, but also a union of the two families.

(Compare/Contrast attending school at day-time and night-school)

I prefer studying at night-school to studying at day-time school for some reasons. First of all, the tuition fee of the night-school is cheaper than the day-time school each semester. The former costs us only twenty-five thousand dollars each semester, while the latter costs them at least forty-five thousand dollars. The next reason is something about the age of the students. Without doubt, we are older than they. So far as we know, most of us have jobs during the day; while they don’t. And unlike the students of day-time school, we cherish the very opportunity of pursuing knowledge, whereas they are fond of playing. The last reason I want to emphasize is learning attitude. In my opinion, we are more attentive to our studies than the students in the day-time school. If we have any problem on the courses we don’t understand, we have no hesitation in consulting with the teachers, whereas most of them seldom do so. Luckily and proudly, I would like to say I am one of the students of night school.

GO ON A DIET

It is a big challenge for me to go on a diet on my daily life. I have now eaten less food than ever before because of following the recipes which the dietitian gave me; that is, I have got to eat those low calorie food such as agar, devil’s tongue, and vegetables, etc. I have to not only decrease the quantity of food, but also absorb enough nourishment. Take myself for example. I need to take vitamin B and C pills every day, and eat all kinds of fruits after my breakfast. Suddenly, Gone are my special days, especially when I could eat delicious food at the restaurant. These days most of my foods, without doubt, are low oil, low fat, and low sugar. Even though it brings about the great effect on my daily life, it makes me more healthy than ever. Through the success of my experience, I have learned how to restrain my appetite and eat healthy food from a habit. Therefore, if you want to keep yourself in good shape, going on a diet properly is the best way.

How is Beer made?

Beer is made from malt, rice, hop, and water. First of all, as for beer producing, the basic raw materials, malt and rice, should be mashed in the modern machine. Secondly, add the hop and then boil and cook it, then the clear wort is ready for yeast to ferment beer. Thirdly, pitch the yeast, and then the wort should be transformed into alcohol and CO2. After bonding with beer, wait for 40-45days of maturation period, and the freshest beer will be produced. At last, filter the beer and at this point, the beer should be in beautiful transparent amber color. After the processes mentioned above, the beer will be ready for you to enjoy!
